Midžor (2168m), from Gorni Lom, Bulgaria
Peak 9 on my bike tour to China was gonna be Midžor, the highest mountain of Serbia. It's directly on the border between Serbia and Bulgaria. Hiking it from the Bulgarian side seemed possible. I found a couple of treks but no descriptions, no current ones anyways. So I was not sure if it was possible or if I would run into some problems, perhaps trouble with the border police.
We had our troubles of getting to the foot of the mountain and finding a place to sleep (I wrote about that in the blog).
There are no guest houses in Gorni Lom, Dolni Lom or anywhere near Midžor, which seems bizarre. We stayed in a place that looked and felt like a guest house but I am not sure it was one. I don't know the name of the place and no one spoke English. The people there were very friendly though, the beds were alright and we've been served excellent dinner, breakfast and lunch. We had a few drinks (beers, wine, home made liquor) and paid 50 Lev total, about 25€. Very cheap, it seemed to a friendly or off - season price. The place is located at the start of my GPS track, I will post it at the end of this text.
I started the hike at 7am. We wanted to go on cycling later in the day so I was set to do the 8km and roughly 1300hm rather fast.
The hike itself was really enjoyable, the most enjoyable one I did on this trip so far. Weather was nice, views were good, the path was well marked and easy to follow. There are also several shelter places that are top nodge and newly made up. Infrastructure of the path is a 1+.
I spotted some wild life: Deer, foxes and hares too.
It was quite cold and at the end of the trees a cloud passed through and covered trees and bushes in ice, made for spectacular photos.
Leaving the trees the path continued on a gravel road, perhaps an old military road. After a while the gps path turned left. For the most part I could not see the way as it was overgrown by bushes so I just kept walking, it's easy enough to find the way to the ridge. The ridge line is also the border between Serbia and Bulgaria and the path follows it along. There seemed to be several peaks and as I reached the first one marked by a stone I had to continue for another 500m to the peak of Midžor.
Very nice hike with great views over Bulgaria and Serbia.
